Founded in 1815, the Swiss Academy of Sciences, SAS, is the most important platform for the dissemination and promotion of the natural sciences. The SAS is formally recognized by the Swiss Confederation as an institution for the promotion of scientific research. It aims to facilitate interdisciplinary cooperation and scientific exchange,improve public and media awareness and comprehension for the natural sciences, encourage the dissemination of scientific research results, cooperate in the establishment of a Swiss science policy, encourage international scientific cooperation.

The SANW runs numerous interactive systems in the intranet and for the internet community and provides hosting services to it's 140 member organizations to concentrate scientific data on our database and publishing systems to the benefit of all. We are two people in the IT "group", managing all aspects of the IT needs.
































Networking

40 nodes, 12 servers, Gigabit Ethernet,
fully switched network.
I am fully responsible for:

I am fully responsible for all aspects of the
IT security@SANW:

-Monitoring, Troubleshooting, Incidence handling

Server administration

It's part of my duty to plan, evaluate, install, configure and operate 12 dedicated servers to fulfill a broad range of services to both, the staff and the internet/society:

-Web (Apache 1.3,2.0, WebSTAR)
-FTP (pure-ftp)
-Database (MySQL, postgreSQL,Filemaker)
-Scripting (PHP, Lasso, CDML)
-Mail (postfix, qmail, vpopmail, squirrel)
-DNS (BIND, prim. & secondary)

-Groupware (NowUpToDate)
-Backup (Retrospect network backup)
-Network monitoring (various tools)

All systems run on either MacOS 9 or MacOS X (Darwin/FreeBSD)






















DB management & development

The academy has many varying needs for databases, both for internal management as well as for internet publishing and data sharing. I am responsible for database engineering and front end development as well as all aspects of running database servers.

Webdesign

In early days it was solely my duty to develop, design, implement, code and run the academy website. In the mean time, we have moved the webdesign duties to the public relation group. However, webdesign is still a big part of the job due to the numerous database interfaces required in the academy web sites.

Our small team (two people) is fully responsible for all internal IT relevant instructions and teaching - from security instructions to custom styles in Word, from Webdesign support to hardware troubleshooting.

-Developping and preparing internal instructions as in-class lessons as well as print and online manuals

-Coordination of internal and external IT education

-First and Second Level support for hard- and software, network and internet
